How to run a karaoke party
A simple playbook for hosts: set up the screen, get people connected, and keep the night moving.
Before guests arrive
- Connect a laptop or streaming stick to the TV and open karaokemo in a full browser. Avoid tiny in-app browsers (Instagram, Facebook, some hotel “Wi-Fi login” windows).
- Start a karaoke screen and write the Screen ID somewhere visible — or leave the QR large on a second display or a printed card by the drinks.
- Play a short test track to unlock sound. Some TVs block unmuted autoplay until you press OK once. Confirm lyrics are readable from the back of the room.
- Confirm Wi-Fi works for guest phones. Have a backup hotspot if the venue network is locked down or requires a separate login per device.
Room layout
Point the TV at the singers, not only at the couch. If you have a microphone, keep the TV volume under the vocal so people are not shouting over the instrumental. Phone speakers will not fill a room — the karaoke screen device is the PA.
Leave a little space in front of the screen. First-time singers often stand too close and block the lyrics for everyone else.
Getting everyone connected
Ask guests to open the site, enter the Screen ID, and optionally type their name before adding a song. Names show on the queue and before playback so the room knows who is up. If someone cannot scan the QR, reading the code aloud is enough.
Do not assume every phone is on the venue Wi-Fi. A guest on cellular can still join the website, but search and video on the screenstill need the TV or laptop online.
Building a good queue
Mix familiar choruses with a few deep cuts. If search is slow, paste YouTube links from a shared chat. Keep a “safe” opener ready for shy first singers — something most of the room already knows. The song ideas guide has patterns that work in mixed-age rooms without turning the night into a contest.
Host jobs that are not singing
Someone should own skip, volume, and “is this the karaoke version?” That person stands near the screen. Everyone else can stay on the remote. If you try to run skip from across the room, you will spend the night unlocking the TV screensaver.
Do not start the screen on a phone
The device that starts the karaoke screen is the stage. A phone as the stage means notifications, thermal throttling, and a six-inch lyric sheet. Chromecast or AirPlay of that phone is worse: the cast session dies when a call comes in. Use a TV browser or a laptop on HDMI. Phones join as remotes.
Two of the same song
First-come order is literal. If two people add the same chorus, both sit in the queue. Ask the second person to remove theirs from that phone while it is still waiting. Do not wait for the duplicate to become now-playing and then argue about skip. Duplicates are how mixed rooms stall after a good opener.
Kids, language, and skip
karaokemo will play any embeddable YouTube video someone queued. The host is still the person who skips an upload that is wrong for the audience. Check kids’ picks before they hit the TV. In bilingual rooms, alternate languages so one side of the family is not locked out for forty minutes.
Energy dips that are on you
A good queue still dies when the host leaves skip on the kitchen counter, lets a ten-hour mix sit as now-playing, or starts a second screen “just to test.” Those are not shy-guest problems. We listed them separately in mistakes that stall a karaoke nightso this playbook can stay on layout, connecting, and turns.
Volume is a host job too. Guest phones do not drive the TV speakers. Ride the level when a quiet upload follows a dance track, and when YouTube drops an ad inside a video. Geometry for mics and feedback: room layout and sound.
During the party
- Encourage short turns — one song each before repeats — so more people get on stage.
- If someone freezes, use Skip on the screen and keep the energy going. Do not wait for the video to time out.
- Between songs, the singer intro (“Singer is …”) gives the room a beat to cheer. Point at the person if the name is a nickname.
- Watch the queue for two versions of the same track. Ask the guest to drop the worse one from their phone if they still can.
Afterward
Close the screen tab when you are done. Idle rooms are cleaned up automatically after a day without activity. For setup basics, see How it works. If search or sound failed, keep the troubleshooting page handy for next time. First-timers can follow the first-night checklist instead of improvising the first twenty minutes.
